How much protein on Zepbound?

Zepbound (tirzepatide) quiets appetite, and protein is what protects muscle while weight comes off. Two 2025 guidance documents give slightly different ranges — enter your weight and see both side by side, plus the fat-free-mass and fixed-gram alternatives. Nutrition arithmetic only: nothing here is about dosing.

Common questions

How much protein should I eat on Zepbound?

Neither guidance document sets a Zepbound-specific number. The 2025 joint advisory (four US obesity and nutrition societies) reports 1.2–1.6 g per kg per day as proposed during active weight reduction; the 2025 modified-Delphi consensus recommends 1.2–1.5 g per kg of actual body weight per day during the weight-loss phase. Both apply to semaglutide and tirzepatide alike.

Should I use my current weight or my goal weight?

The Delphi consensus uses actual body weight. The joint advisory notes that for people with obesity, actual weight can significantly overestimate needs, and offers two alternatives: 1.5 g per kg of fat-free mass if you know your body composition, or an absolute 80–120 g per day.

Is there an upper limit?

The joint advisory says prolonged intake at or above 2 g/kg/day should be avoided, and that intake should not fall below 0.4–0.5 g/kg/day. Kidney disease changes the answer — ask your clinician.

Is Zepbound the same as Mounjaro?

Both contain tirzepatide from Eli Lilly. Zepbound is FDA-approved for chronic weight management (weekly injection); the protein guidance above does not differ between them.

Method & sources

Joint advisory: 1.2–1.6 g/kg/day reported as proposed during active weight reduction; 1.5 g/kg of fat-free mass when body composition is known (fat-free mass = weight × (1 − body fat %)); or an absolute 80–120 g/day; avoid prolonged intake ≥ 2 g/kg/day. Delphi consensus: 1.2–1.5 g/kg of actual body weight per day during the weight-loss phase, ≥ 0.8 g/kg/day during maintenance. Portions use USDA FoodData Central per-100 g values. Not medical advice; kidney disease, pregnancy and other conditions change protein needs.
