Common questions

What is sleep debt?

The gap between the sleep you need and the sleep you got, added up over days. Adults need at least 7 hours a night on a regular basis, per the AASM and Sleep Research Society consensus.

Can I pay back sleep debt on the weekend?

Partly. In a lab study where people could sleep up to 12 hours a night, recovering from about 1 hour of habitual nightly shortfall took 4 days of extended sleep (Kitamura 2016). One long lie-in does not reset it.

How do I know my own sleep need?

Most adults land between 7 and 9 hours. On a holiday with no alarm, your sleep length after the first few nights settles near your need. That lab study found an average optimal sleep of 8.4 hours.

How it's computed

Debt = Σ (need − hours slept) across the 7 nights; nights above your need offset nights below it, and the total is floored at zero. Average = total ÷ 7. Nights under 7 h are counted against the AASM/SRS minimum. Payback nights = debt ÷ the extra sleep you choose per night, rounded up. That arithmetic is the floor; the lab evidence says real recovery is slower, so treat it as a minimum.
