Common questions

What is BMR?

Basal (or resting) metabolic rate: the calories your body burns at rest in a day to keep you alive — breathing, circulation, temperature. It is usually the largest part of daily burn.

Which formula is used?

Mifflin-St Jeor (1990): 10 × kg + 6.25 × cm − 5 × age, + 5 for men or − 161 for women. Expect about ±10% error for one person.

Does BMR drop with age?

In the formula, by 5 kcal a day per year of age at the same weight and height — the table on this page shows it decade by decade.

How do I get daily calories from BMR?

Multiply by an activity factor (1.2 to 1.9). The TDEE calculator does this for every level.

How it's computed

BMR = 10 × kg + 6.25 × cm − 5 × age + 5 (men) or − 161 (women), rounded to 10 kcal. The age table holds weight and height fixed.
