A1C to Average Glucose Calculator
Turn an A1C percentage into the average blood sugar it represents — the ADAG study formula behind the ADA's eAG — or work back from a glucose average.

Common questions
How do I convert A1C to average blood sugar?
The ADAG study formula: estimated average glucose (mg/dL) = 28.7 × A1C − 46.7. An A1C of 7% is about 154 mg/dL.
What A1C means prediabetes or diabetes?
CDC's diagnostic ranges: below 5.7% normal, 5.7–6.4% prediabetes, 6.5% or above diabetes. One result is not a diagnosis; a clinician confirms with repeat testing.
What should my A1C goal be?
CDC says the goal for most people with diabetes is 7% or less; your clinician sets yours.
Why doesn't my meter average match my eAG?
Meters sample a few moments; A1C reflects about 3 months. Anemia, kidney or liver disease, some blood disorders, blood loss or transfusion and pregnancy can shift A1C (CDC).
How it's computed
eAG (mg/dL) = 28.7 × A1C − 46.7 (ADAG, R² = 0.84). mmol/L = mg/dL ÷ 18.016. Reverse: A1C = (eAG + 46.7) ÷ 28.7. Categories follow CDC. This converts numbers; it does not diagnose.
